Researchers of the Latin American and Caribbean development note the instability of their socio-economic development in a broad perspective, which complicates the solution of the problems of industrialisation and innovative development of the continent.
Different Latin American countries set themselves different tasks depending on their level of development, accumulated potential, socio-demographic composition of the population and their own experience of economic modernisation.
Many Latin American countries need to make their way up to modernize their industrial potential, but already now such areas as biotechnology and the whole range of life sciences, renewable energy technologies, etc. have enormous development potential.
The main focus of the session participants is on:
Issues related to the possibility of ensuring innovative development of the Latin American and Caribbean countries to increase the sustainability of the socio-economic development of the continent as a whole.
Issue of infrastructure support for industrialisation and the introduction of innovations, including through the development of alternative energy.
Identifying the main areas of innovative development of countries, including the synergy effect of participation in BRICS+.
Considering areas of sustainable tourism development in the region.
Facts and figures
The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are attractive to tourists due to their favorable climate and geographical location. The strategies of these countries are aimed at increasing the tourist flows, but there are also initiatives to ensure innovation and reduce the environmental and social impact, particularly in rural tourism.
No country in Latin America and the Caribbean spends more than 2% of GDP on R&D.
The coronavirus pandemic has had a major impact on the region, it caused mass business closures and an increase in unemployment. More than half of all tax revenue comes from VAT, while personal taxes from citizens account for only 10% of the total. Only 10% of the population in the region are registered as taxpayers.
One of the main challenges for the region is to increase innovation activity, which will ensure the development of the countries of the region, including a stable flow of tourists.
